SKIMS medicos perform first Septal procedure

GK NEWS NETWORK

Srinagar, Jan 28: Continuing with its efforts that the valley based cardiac patients don’t need to go outside for specialized treatments, the Department of Cardiology at SK Institute of Medical Sciences has conducted its first Septal Alcohol Ablation, the SKIMS officials Thursday said.
“The Department of Cardiology, SKIMS, under the guidance of Prof Khurshid Iqbal (HOD Cardiology) performed the first Septal ablation in the state,” a SKIMS spokesman said.
He said the procedure was done by Prof Nisar Ahmad Tramboo, a prominent medico and his team.
“Alcohol Septal ablation is done in a condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy whose patients have very thick heart walls due to genetic aberrations. By injecting alcohol in one of the branches of the coronary arteries supplying the most affected area, an artificial heart attack is induced,” Dr Tramboo told Greater Kashmir. “This,” the Dr Tramboo said, “leads to thinning of the wall thickening over a period of time and amelioration of symptoms, leading to a better quality of life.”
“It has its own complications and is being done in very few centers in the sub continent   and some specialized centers all over the world,” he added. “The success of this procedure ensures that patients of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy will not need to go outside the state for this procedure,” said a team member.
