Highway re-opens
Poor Visibility Delays Flights
GK NEWS NETWORK
Srinagar, Jan 4: The vehicular traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu highway resumed Monday afternoon but most flights to and from Srinagar International Airport were delayed due to poor visibility.
Traffic police officials said due to the slippery conditions at Banihal, no vehicles were allowed from either side of the highway till afternoon. “The traffic movement resumed after the road became motorable. We first allowed the stranded vehicles to move and preference was given to passenger buses,” Senior Superintendent of Police, Traffic (Rural), G M Wadoo told Greater Kashmir.
He said that trucks carrying essential commodities were also allowed to move late in the evening.
The authorities had suspended the traffic on the highway Sunday afternoon after the road near Banihal tunnel had become slippery due to the accumulation of snow.
The SSP said the traffic movement was subject to the weather conditions. “We will allow two-way traffic on the highway on Tuesday if weather permits,” he said.
Meanwhile, several flights to and from Srinagar were delayed on Monday due to poor visibility. Almost all the flights arriving at Srinagar International Airport were delayed by one to two hours.
On Sunday, all but one flights were cancelled due to poor visibility.
