6-months events sign of aggressive militaristic approach: IPTK

Srinagar, June 30: The International Peoples Tribunal on Human Rights and Justice in Kashmir has described the events from the last six months in Kashmir as sign of ‘aggressive militaristic approach of India.’
“While commitments to political diplomacy frame relations between New Delhi and Islamabad, in Kashmir, there are no such engagements with civil society or with the pro-freedom leadership,” said convenor IPTK, Angna Chatterji.
“There is no acknowledgement of civil society’s insistent demand for the right to self-determination,” she said.
“Kashmir is not a problem, but a conflict zone,” she said while addressing a press conference.
“We wish to keep on record that following the Majils-e-Mashawarat of Shopian’s request that IPTK inquire into the rape and killing of Asiya Jan and Neelofar Jan in May 2009, to deliver an accurate understanding of the matter and define a mechanism for justice, we wrote to the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah in January 2010, requesting cooperation and access, which have been denied to us till date,” she said.
She said the Government of J&K and the Government of India had not undertaken investigations into the findings of ‘Buried Evidence’, IPTK’s report on unknown, unmarked, and mass graves in Kashmir, or acted on its recommendations.
“Such action may have generated constructive interventions into the continuing chain of extrajudicial executions by the military and paramilitary personnel,” she added.
