SMC mulls old City sanitation, seeks 'safe passage'

Srinagar, July 11: Following damages to some garbage laden trucks of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation during recent clashes, the corporation has appealed the people to provide “safe passage to the trucks”. The civic body asked the police to entertain curfew passes accusing them of not acknowledging the permission.
As per the SMC officials four trucks ferrying garbage were damaged Tuesday during clashes between the rock pelting youth and police. They accused the police of not entertaining their curfew passes at most of the places, a charge denied by the cops.
The SMC said the vehicles were attacked at Achen, Bemina and two places in Shahr-e-Khaas.
Meanwhile, the Health Office, SMC, Dr Reyaz Ahmed has appealed the Srignarites to provide “safe passage to the sanitation teams, particularly the Safai Walas so that the garbage be lifted.”
Given the summer days the official said it was vital to keep the City clean on regularly basis or else there was a fear of outbreak of epidemic.
“We vehemently appeal the people, particularly those living in Shahr-e-Khaas to understand the importance of sanitation,” he added.
“For the last two weeks, our sanitation and transport staff isn’t being allowed to perform their duties in the old City because of strict enforcement of curfew,” he added.
