PM’s ‘Advisor’ held at Katra
Impersonator takes JK, Punjab police for ride
Jammu, July 13: An elderly person, who impersonated as an advisor to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh-to enjoy special facilities at Vaishno Devi-was arrested by the Katra Police on Tuesday, official sources said.
They said the imposter, Manmohan Singh, son of Arjun Singh, resident of 115-A Fateh Nagar near Hari Nagar New Delhi, falsely claimed to be an ‘advisor’ in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to enjoy special treatment at Vaishno Devi.
The accused reportedly took Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir government for ride for more than two days before landing in police custody.
“The accused along with his niece, a Sadhu and two drivers entered Lakhanpur - the gateway of Jammu and Kashmir - on Sunday in his personnel vehicle fitted with beacon light and escorted by a heavy contingent of Punjab police”, police sources told Greater Kashmir.
Jammu and Kashmir police provided its own escort to the accused from Kathua onwards and he drove his vehicle straightway to his relative’s residence at house number 104, sector 11 in Nanak Nagar area, where he stayed for one and half an hour.
“The impersonator along with his relatives identified as Sonia Kour and her husband, Shamsher Singh, son of Karan Singh left for Katra at around 9:00 p.m,” they said, adding “Interestingly, huge deployment was made in and around the area in view of visit of imposter advisor to Prime Minister of India. Besides, Jammu Municipal Corporation had also conducted a special sanitation drive to clean the area.”
Sources said the accused arrived Jammu in three vehicles “They reached Katra town at around 10:30 p.m and stayed at Dayarishi Anand Bramchari Niwas Shri Sidh Peeth in VVIP Jayanti complex for one hour. He performed darshan at the shrine early this morning and returned to base camp where he along with other persons were arrested and taken into custody by the Police,” sources said.
Police became suspicious of activities of Manmohan Singh who was provided security and transport facility by authorities, sources said, adding “Police verified the antecedents of the person from the PMO and it turned out that he was an imposter.”
Unconfirmed reports said, "He had worked with the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh when he (PM) was Finance Minister.” Sources said before entering J&K he visited Chandigarh and paid obeisance at Golden Temple in Amritsar with full fledged protocol from the Punjab government, where he had also impersonated himself.
This act has led to huge loss to government exchequer, sources said adding, a case of fraud was registered. Police however, have started an investigation into the matter. Sources said that he was bailed out later in the evening.
