Doctors’ duty

This refers to the article “Doctors who have made the difference” by Dr. A Wahid. The author is very right that doctors should play a wider social role and should not ruin their self respect by running after people especially those in power. Doctor’s profession is very supreme and a doctor who is really competent in his skills and affectionate towards his patients earns public love and respect. Dr. Wahid is right that a doctor should have mercy on them. Incompetent doctors behave arrogantly with common people. Having said this, I regret that Dr. Wahid has showered unnecessary praises on Dr. Naseer, Dr. Allaqband and Dr. Ali jan. These doctors always made it a point to remain in good books of rulers. They would feel elated even being in the company of an ordinary MLA. And I may inform Dr. Wahid that it is not important for a doctor to be a good writer or a man of literary taste. What is needed of him is compassion, sympathy, concern for poor patients and a humane heart. Rather than socializing for entertainment, the doctor should spend his time on research and patient care. He should not bow before authorities like a coward as Dr. Wahid has rightly advised.
