Govt contemplates to introduce Open Market Sale Scheme: Akhoon

Srinagar July 15: Minister for Consumer Affairs & Public Distribution (CA&PD) and Transport, Qamar Ali Akhoon has said that the government has taken effective measures in maintaining supply position of food grains in the State, adding that sufficient stock of essentials is available in the stores and godowns of the department to cater the requirement of the people.
This, according to an official statement, was stated by the Minister while reviewing the stock and supply position of essentials in the State at a high level meeting of officers of CA&PD department here today.
The meeting was informed that buffer stock of food grains is available in the Food Corporation of India (FCI) godowns including, 38340 quintals of wheat, 277240 quintals rice and 34740 quintals sugar, while as, in the godowns of CA&PD, 78543 quintals of rice, 12000 quintals sugar and 12000 quintals wheat is available to fulfil the requirement of the people of the valley.
It was informed that during the first fifteen days of the current month, 2.76 lakh quintals of rice, 26500 quintals wheat and 11,000 quintals sugar was dispatched to various destinations for onward supply to consumers. Besides, 36,000 quintals of rice, 33,000 quintals atta, 7,000 quintal sugar and 36,000 litres K. oil has been dispatched to border area for dumping the stock for winter months. 7, 7500 quintals of rice and 12500 quintals sugar was dispatched to Leh and Kargil districts by FCI, the meeting was told.
The meeting was informed that sufficient stock of 1.83 lakh LPG cylinders have been available at HP, plant at Pampore and 1.50 lakh cylinders were distributed to the consumers during the current month.
While reviewing the supply position in Jammu Division, it was given out that during the current month, 84107 quintals of wheat, 38899 quintals rice and 10,016 quintals sugar was dispatched to various districts of Jammu Division.
Addressing the meeting, the Minister stressed upon the officers of the department to discharge their duties with added responsibility so that the people do not suffer for want of essentials.
He asked the concerned to distribute the ration in every locality and ensure opening of ration ghats as per the convenience of the consumers. He said that there should be no compromise in quality of food grains being provided to the consumers. He instructed for making availability of essentials at the Yatra routes for the facilities of the Yatris.
For bringing more transparency in the Public Distribution System (PDS), Akhoon asked the Directors of both the divisions to define the areas for introducing EPDS on trial basis. For the convenience of the consumers, he said that Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) is also being introduced in the State shortly.
