2 troopers killed in Machil gunfight

Srinagar, July 1: Two troopers were killed in a gun-battle with militants on the Line of Control in Machil sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Thursday.
“Two troopers have been killed in the encounter. Search operation in the area continues,” said Defence spokesman Lt. Col J.S Brar.
The troopers of 45 Rashtriya Rifles guarding the fence on LOC noticed a group of heavily-armed militants trying to sneak into this side near Zero Post in Machil sector, some 60 kilometers away from district headquarter Kupwara. The troopers patrolling the LOC challenged them following which a gunfight broke out, sources said.
 During the gunfight, two soldiers identified as Sepoy Mahaish Kumar and Sepoy Maan Singh were killed.
 Sources said another fierce gunfight has broken out between militants and troopers in the evening in the Nowgam sector of Kupwara district.
 Gunmen shot dead a villager in Udhampur district, police said today. Gunmen shot at Masqoor Ahmed Malik in Ballan Dhar belt of Chenani tehsil of Udhampur district last night.
 Meanwhile, a girl was injured in Kreeri area of north Kashmir’s Varmul district on Thursday when an unidentified explosive went off near her house.
 The girl received minor injuries in the blast which also damaged some glass panes of the house, police said, adding that they are ascertaining the cause of the explosion.
