Your editorial on 26th June is an eye opener for the civil society who need to start a campaign not only for the police reforms but also the annulment of draconian laws and acts prevalent in the Jammu and Kashmir. A number of commissions and committees were appointed during the last fifty years but no recommendation has ever been accepted, not to speak of implementation. The police instead of protecting the life and property of the people have been doing otherwise with impunity especially during the last twenty years. The political parties when out of power shed crocodile tears and make tall claims to do away with these laws and acts once they are voted to power and then forget about it even when they have an absolute majority in the assembly. No politician seems to be ready to lose the services of the police. The present day police, though having the benefit of better education and service conditions than their predecessors, do not hesitate to kill and destroy the properties in the name security. The police in the past was also known for third degree treatment of the victims who would all the same return to their homes alive and not dead. What a pity that a senior army general and even the army chief have called the AFSPA a sacred book. Can they afford to do so in the world’s largest democracy without the tacit approval of the political bosses?
