BJP opposes AFSPA dilution
Jammu: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday warned the Central and state government for any decision to dilute Armed Forces Special Power Act in the state.
The party state president, Shamsher Singh Manhas, said the AFSPA dilution would ‘handicap’ the armed forces.
“It was because of some powers under AFSPA that situation in J&K has witnessed some improvement,” he claimed.
Manhas said the authorities must realize the ground situations under which the forces were working in J&K.
Supporting the Army Chief General V K Singh’s statement that it was for the centre to provide legal protection to army, deployed in areas where they would face well-armed and well-trained militants, he said government should take this as a serious issue and not fall prey to the contentions raised by some leaders for their “vested political interests.”
