Traffic signals: we need to regulate the system

This refers to the news report regarding Traffic Signal Installation in the twin cities of Srinagar and Jammu. Installation of this system is much-needed not only in Srinagar and Jammu cities, but also in all district headquarters and major intersections of highway from Varmul to Lakhanpur. Reason: the heavy pressure of traffic on narrow roads. But the hurdle for installation of this system cannot be the paucity of funds or the selection of department that will act as an executing agency. The fact is that neither traffic police department nor bureaucrats will be interested in the installation of such system. How can the VIPs in their luxurious vehicles wait for minutes together for a green signal? Traffic signal won’t recognize VIPs nor differentiate common and luxurious vehicles. After all our VIPs have a habit of crossing all road barriers, violating traffic rules and  running fast on the pretext of security reasons. Even during the heavy traffic jam police personnel, cops escorting them and police on duty clear road for them. This preferential treatment on road is not possible once the Traffic Signal System is installed where you have to follow twinkling Red, Green and Yellow lights.
