SMC threatens action against hospitals on waste disposal

Srinagar, July 24: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation on Saturday threatened to take action against hospitals and other medical institutes in the City not adhering to the High Court guidelines on disposal of biomedical and other wastes.
In a statement, the SMC Health Officer, Dr Riyaz Ahmad said: “It has been observed that most of the hospitals/nursing homes/ clinical laboratories are not disposing their bio-medical waste properly as per the guidelines of the Hon’ble High Court.”
He added that: “It has also been observed that most of hospitals/nursing homes/ clinical laboratories are not following the required guidelines of Pollution Control Board and are throwing their bio-medical waste in the garbage collection of the SMC, which is total violation of the Hon-ble Court directions.”
“In order to curb the menace the heads of all the Nursing homes are once again directed not to dispose off their bio-medical waste properly, otherwise action will be initiated against the defaulters, which may be even closure of these Nursing Homes/ Clinical Laboratories.”
