Unrest makes it imperative for political dialogue on Kashmir: Tarigami
GOWHAR BHAT
Srinagar, July 25: The State Secretary, CPI (M), and Member Legislative Assembly, MY Tarigami Sunday demanded that a Parliamentary Committee be constituted to hold a sustainable dialogue with all shades of opinion to end the ongoing crisis in Kashmir.
Addressing a news conference here, he said the unrest had made it imperative that a political dialogue be initiated.
“Dialogue is the only way to resolve the Kashmir issue. But it should not be something ad hoc. The best way out is to involve all political parties in the dialogue. Let there be a Parliamentary Committee comprising members from each party and let them initiate a dialogue,” Tarigami said.
The committee, he said, should hold talks with the all shades of opinion including mainstream and the separatist leadership. “They should also hold talks with the younger generation of Kashmir which has become disillusioned. The youth in Kashmir want to say something, but unfortunately nobody listens to them,” he said. “The dialogue should be a sustained one. It should not stop. If the dialogue stops, forces inimical to peace shall again surface.”
Tarigami said that the committee must also find the avenues for the employment for the unemployed youth of the state, mainly in Kashmir. “There are around five lakh unemployed youth in the state. This is a main reason for their disillusionment. The committee shall form a comprehensive plan on how the unemployment can be alleviated.”
Tarigami, who had recently met Prime Minister, Manmoham Singh, UPA chairperson, Sonia Gandhi and Home Minister, P Chidambaram, said that he informed the Congress high command about the situation and put forward suggestions about improving it.
He said that he had urged the Sonia Gandhi that all the recent civilian killings be probed by a “credible commission.”
“New Delhi must respond to the situation, but not through the security prism. This is a political unrest and needs to be addressed with a sincere and humane approach. New Delhi must clear the doubts that it is not sincere in addressing the grievances of Kashmiris.”
Asked about the youth pelting stones on the streets, Tarigami said, “The youth who throw stones actually want to say something. We need to listen to them.”
He made an appeal to all the political parties not to resort to “blame-game politics” saying that all the parties need to come together to resolve the crisis. “But so far we have failed to deliver.”
Tarigami put forward the suggestions for improving the situation in the state which includes implementing recommendations of Prime Minister’s Working Groups, revocation of AFSPA, release of all political prisoners and youth arrested during the recent protests
