Trouble erupts in JU over alleged custodial torture of scholar

Students on rampage, ransack DSW office

RAJEEV SHARMA

Jammu, July 26: The students and scholars went on rampage at Jammu University on Monday, ransacking the office of Dean Student Welfare after the authorities ‘refused’ to act on the complaint of alleged torture of a scholar in police custody on July 23. The agitated students were demanding that FIR shall be lodged against the Police officer and his subordinate involved in alleged torture of the scholar.
Hundreds of students and scholars damaged the university property after the Dean Student Welfare, Prof J S Tara allegedly paid no heed to students’ demand of legal action against the police officer who allegedly “tortured” a scholar from Department of Dogri.
The mayhem continued till the senior police officials reached on the spot and pacified the agitators.
Later, the University authorities constituted a three-member committee to look into the matter and asked it to submit its report within three days.
According to the students, the scholar Yash Pal Sharma, was picked allegedly picked up by police from examination Block after he had heated arguments with the Dy SP, posted in campus.
“The Dy SP was in plain clothes and gave severe thrashing to the scholar in full public gaze. Later, he was allegedly picked up by the police and lodged in illegal custody, where he was allegedly given third degree torture” they alleged.
Yash Pal also narrated the same story before the media and threatened to commit suicide if stern action was not taken against the erring cops.
He also charged the Police officials with forcibly taking his signatures on paper, asking him to confess his “offence” in Police custody.
