‘Govt didn’t allow me to offer prayers on Shab-e-Baraat’
Srinagar, July 27: Authorities on Tuesday prevented the Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, from discharging his religious duties on the occasion of Shab-e-Baraat.
“It is for the first time in the past 20-years that I have not been allowed to move out from house and offer congregational prayers at Jamia Masjid on this auspicious night,” Mirwaiz told Greater Kashmir.
He described it as “direct interference” in the religious affairs. “We cannot tolerate this and it will have far reaching consequences. It seems that state government and New Delhi have forgotten that JK is a Muslim majority state and it has to respect our sentiments.”
Mirwaiz said that history stands testimony to the fact that no politics is discussed at Jamia Masjid on auspicious nights and government had no justification for keeping him under house arrest.
