Furnish records about Qayoom’s detention: Court to govt

SAMAAN LATEEF

Srinagar, July 27: The High Court today directed the state government to furnish all records pertaining to the detention of High Court Bar Association President, Mian Abdul Qayoom under Public Safety Act. Qayoom was detained on July 29.
After hearing Qayoom’s plea seeking permission to plead his case, the court of Justice Hakeem Imtiyaz Hussein passed the directions to the District Magistrate.
Advocate Manzoor Ahmad Dar and Advocate Muhammad Ashraf Bhat, on behalf of Bar president, had moved the application before the Chief Justice, Justice Aftab Saika who later transferred the case to Justice Hakeem Imtiyaz Hussein.
In its application to the Chief Justice, Qayoom said, “I know more about the case than anybody else. Therefore, I want to argue the case myself before the court.”
After the arrest, Qayoom was shifted to Hiranagar sub-jail, Jammu. Qayoom has been detained for “misusing the Bar platform for secessionist activities, providing legal aid to striking employees, encouraging stone-pelters and launching separate probes against incidents.” Qayoom has also been accused of “questioning genuineness of anti-militancy operations by the security forces”.
Meanwhile, in HCBA general secretary G N Shaheen’s illegal detention case, Justice Virender Singh asked the government to file objections to the application filed by the Bar in which it had sought shifting of Shaheen from central jail Rajouri to Srinagar central jail.
