Govt orders probe into check dam work along Chenab
SUMIT HAKHOO
Jammu, July 27: The government has ordered an inquiry into the complaints of use of sub-standard material in the construction of check dam on river Chenab in Pargawal area close to Pakistan.
According to sources, the dam was constructed at Rs 50 lakh with a view to divert water from the river for the irrigation purpose to the areas along the border.
The inquiry was ordered after the villagers complained to the Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand that contractors engaged by the Irrigation and Flood Control department used sub-standard material for the construction.
Sources said not only this the government had also ordered the department to check the quality of material being used for flood control works along the Chenab after the recent floods exposed the shortcomings of the protection measures taken by the department after water seeped into the villages and agriculture land at many places along the river.
Confirming this, Executive Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Akhnoor K L Angral said the department had stopped the payment of the contractor and the inquiry had been started.
