Kashmir – Common Sentiments

CONCERN

SO WE NEED AN UNDERSTANDING TO PUT THINGS IN THE RIGHT PERSPECTIVE, WRITES SHAHID ANJUM

Recent uprising in Kashmir, has once again proved that there is something wrong somewhere at the core. There are feelings which have never been allowed to come out and addressed. Boiling sentiments are kept under the political lid for short term gains and to develop a forced conviction over the real sentiments of the people. It is very much possible that the volcano may erupt once for all and prove costly to nations and humanity.

The real issue of people has rarely been on the political agenda of the politicians, although the grave phase of this mass uprising may now be limited to the protests and “Chalo Chalo”, but people around the world are deeply concerned.

People are fed up and shattered but in a hope to see a better tomorrow, in a hope to see some consensus among the leaders, in a hope to achieve a settlement and in a hope for justice, they stand still and protest on calls from every one.  Anger and resentment among people of this burning paradise is not only for current political setup but against everyone who exploit these unfortunate events as opportunities to build up their political agenda. It is against the traders of this movement , against those who come to lead when people are on streets.

Past events have proved how the stakeholders of this waxed issue have utilized it for their petty personal gains and just to save their political egos. It is a chance for both the factions of Hurriyat to understand the sentiments and work closely as a unit, shun difference and rigidity, open new channels, find a feasible solution acceptable to every stakeholder of the issue.

One can realize the anguish among the young generation on social networking sites, what is supposed to be a platform for young to keep in touch with near and dear ones. These sites have become a political forum for them to protest against the innocent killings. Against the atrocities on people demanding justice.

The desire to restore peace and minimize the future loss is gaining ground day by day. There is a possibility to stop further destruction and work closely for a solution that is acceptable  to people of Kashmir and other parties associated to the issue.

Powers sitting at centre must recognize that there is a new momentum behind current uprising and realize that they can no longer achieve anything by maintaining status quo and  cannot force decisions unilaterally.  And in an environment where public attitude has hardened against the current political setup, it is necessary to rethink the way the matter has been handled in and to reconsider the policies and laws intended to crush public anger. Need of the hour is to make some amendments in the law, which gives security forces power to kill.

It needs a humanitarian and sincere  efforts  by both the countries concerned i.e India and Pakistan and all the political forums to resolve Kashmir issue once for all. Questions that make riddles and rounds in the mind of a common man are to be answered. A common man is caught in a series of questions like “ are we going in a right direction?  Are we going to achieve anything?  Do we need to change the way we protest?  Will peaceful protests yield some result”, or will it have no impact and will be taken as another seasonal outburst.

Past uprisings  have achieved nothing  except the  egoistic victories of politicians. It seems that mainstream  as well as  separatist leaders take it as a game, everyone plays his or her  turn and keep scoring on the innocent blood of tender and young future of the state.  Shattered dreams of families, hopes and expectations of aging fathers and mothers, nothing can compensate this all.

In our efforts to protest against the current atrocities we cannot ignore the fact that it is a destruction in the long term, it will have significant impact on the future of the state particularly on the generation that is growing under this siege and suppression.

The path to peace and prosperity is not easy, we have gone through major physiological and social changes, which in itself is a major task ahead after achieving the desired stability. Low moral values and social destruction will take ages to compensate.

I believe it is the best time to review the past and find new ways to resolve Kashmir issue , because years of agitation and protests have not yielded  anything.
