Bar continues to boycott courts
SAMAAN LATEEF
Srinagar, July 28: Members of High Court Bar Association (HCBA) continued to boycott work on Wednesday to seek release of the Bar president Mian Abdul Qayoom and the general secretary G N Shaheen.
Scores of lawyers assembled in the Saddar Court complex here this morning and staged a sit in against the “illegal detention” of Qayoom and Shaheen and other pro-freedom leaders under Public Safety Act (PSA).
Since the detention case of Mian Qayoom is listed on Thursday before the High Court, the Bar’s future program will depend on the court judgement in his case.
The HCBA spokesman Muhammad Amin said that struggle had entered into a welcome phase and very soon “We will be bestowed with freedom.”
The short sightedness of state government got exposed after police seized scores of vehicles carrying essential supplies from south Kashmir towns to Srinagar as “relief” for city inhabitants. “State government has showed its suppressive attitude by seizure of vegetables and rice,” Amin said.
Expressing dismay over the recent transfers and postings in Judiciary he said contrary to the seven vacant posts of judges in Srinagar all the posts of judges have been occupied in Jammu. Amin said, “Government is taking care of the rights of Jammu people while as the Kashmiri courts have been deliberately kept without judges to deny justice to people here.”
Bar also criticized the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for warning government employees, who joined protests against the ongoing killings in Kashmir. “We assure legal support to all the employees if their right to protest will be curtailed by the state government,” he said.
Bar urged international committee to extend political support to Kashmiri protest against the ongoing human rights violations here by forces. Bar appealed people to promote unity for accomplishing freedom.
Pertinently, on July 7, Qayoom was arrested by police under PSA and lodged in Hiranagar jail in Jammu. While as on July 17, Shaheen, who had led a protest demonstration here in support of the demand for release of Bar president Mian Abdul Qayoom was arrested from Lethpora, 25km from here and shifted to District jail Rajouri.
