Restoring Autonomy
The passing of Autonomy resolution by NC working committee must be seen in a larger perspective and it needs more introspection. The same resolution was passed by majority in the assembly during Dr. Farooq Abdullah regime. The resolution was presented to the then central Government led by BJP and nothing was done in this regard. When Kashmir is virtually under siege due to multiple factors, does Government of India intend to restore Autonomy so that some political process could be seen taking off. And if Autonomy is not restored, what will NC do in that case. Will the Government resign in protest or just pass the resolution again? Also, regarding releasing political prisoners, the state Government has full authority to release political prisoners, so they must act fast to let the people know that the state Government is in control of the situation. Lastly Autonomy is not the end of the Kashmir problem but surely a means to an end. If New Delhi shows some respect to the wishes of the Kashmiri people, restoring Autonomy will be a good beginning towards a final solution of this vexed problem.
