Omar for speedy implementation of JNNURM projects

Srinagar, July 29: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah Thursday fixed timeline for implementation of various programmes under Jawahar Lal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
An official handout said he directed for weekly reviews of the programme by the Chief Secretary, fortnightly and monthly progress monitoring by the Minister of State for Housing and Deputy Chief Minister while the Chief Minster will himself take stock of the schemes under JNNURM quarterly.
“This is imperative to ensure a complete monitoring of JNNURM at various levels and fast-tracking its implementation” he added.
The Chief Minister gave these directions at a high level meeting held in the City under his chairmanship.
The centrally sponsored scheme, JNNURM envisages upgradation and improvement of twin cities of Jammu and Srinagar and all towns in the state, besides other urban development programmes.
Omar Abdullah highlighted the importance of incorporating reforms under JNNURM in a fixed time line so that funds flow regularly and the projects are completed according to the targets.
He said JNNURM is a comprehensive scheme for the development of cities and towns besides providing basic service to urban poor and helping Integrated Slum Development Programme. He asked the Housing Department and the agencies concerned with JNNURM to gear up at all levels and ensure benefits of the programme to the people in the prescribed time frame.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand, Minister of State for Housing, Nasir Sogami, Political Advisor to Chief Minister, Devendra Singh Rana, Chief Secretary, SS Kapur, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Khurshid Ahmad Ganai, Commissioner Secretary, Planning and Development, BB Vyas, Commissioner Secretary, Housing, Suresh Kumar and various other senior officers.
The Chief Minister said that upgradation and improvement of cities and towns constitute necessary part of the development agenda of his government. “JNNURM like schemes will help to a greater extent to realize the development targets in the cities and town” he said and called for taking best advantage of this centrally funded scheme for addressing the development demands in the urban areas.
In an elaborated PowerPoint presentation, the Commissioner Secretary, Housing presented a resume of the progress on various programmes under JNNURM in the state. He said four projects of Urban Infrastructure Development and Governance (UIDG) have been sanctioned under JNNURM at a cost of Rs. 531.52 crore. He said 86 percent financial achievement and 80 percent physical progress have been registered under these projects which are expected to be completed by the end of March 2011.
