Geelani’s detention challenged
Allow lawyer, family to interact: HC to Govt
NASEER AHMAD
Srinagar, July 3: In a petition challenging detention of Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani under Public Safety Act (PSA) in the High Court his family has described the detention as malafide issued on the directions of police.
“The detention order passed by the District Magistrate Srinagar is politically motivated and passed on the orders of the police and we challenged the same before the High Court,” the president of the High Court Bar Association Mian Abdul Qayoom told Greater Kashmir.
He said in the past one year Geelani challenged many detention orders and even in last month High Court described Geelani a free man saying, “he can go anywhere.”
Qayoom said several criminal cases had been filed against the aged leader. “ The government should have tried him instead of booking him under PSA and keeping him in isolation,” he added.
Pleading the case today in absence of Mian Abdul Qayoom, advocate Muhammad Ashraf Bhat and Mian Muzaffar said, Geelani should be shifted from Chesmashahi to Central jail and be provided proper medical treatment.
The High Court issued a notice to the government asking it to respond why the Hurriyat leader should not be shifted to Central Jail from Chesmashahi. The Court directed the State to allow Geelani’s lawyer, family members and his attendant to visit him at Chesmashahi. The Court directed the government to provide medical aid to the ailing leader.
The single bench of Justice Hakim Imtiyaz Hussain passed the directions here on a petition filed by Geelani’s son-in-Law Muhammad Altaf Shah. The petition filed through advocate Mian Abdul Qayoom said that Geelani has been kept in isolation and he was denied his fundamental right to interact with people.
On June 23, the state government booked Geelani, under Public Safety Act.
In its order the District Magistrate Srinagar, Meraj Ahmad Kakroo said, “Geelani was booked for issuing provocative statements with anti-national feeling and instigating youth for disrupting public order.”
