MAYHEM

ARE WE HEADING TO THE SAME END? ARE WE EXPERIENCING THE SAME SHAT WE EXPERIENCED EARLIER, WRITES AZAM SHAMS

This refers to a series of killings in the past few weeks. The tragedy is that it excites us more than saddening us. It’s a sort of deja vu. Two years back, the same month, the same people. What if this time we succeed in getting justice? What if they act with maturity this time? It’s the same story…. Strikes, Chalos, Arrests, Stones, Curfews, Bullets and Blood. This had not resulted in anything then and as things are turning up, we are apprehensive, that it would be the same now. But then what are the alternatives? What should we do then for getting justice. We are being butchered, our women get desecrated, our children fall as cannon fodder, our youth get disappeared [which is a synonym of ‘killed in kashmir’]. Human rights are violated by sub-humans and we have every right to protest against that. But mind you! Only protest! Results are conventional. Expected. Our conscience will not forgive us if we don’t do that much. Peaceful or violent protests.

It’s a pity on our part that we take the killings more as a statistic and less as a loss. Loss of human resource, Loss of time, Loss of everything that goes in the warp and woof of a decent society. Let's talk on a common minimum level. Everyone wants the bloodshed to end except those who continue to romance death. The mainstream and the separatists, both have failed miserably and shamefully.Their one amicable decision could have stemmed the rising tide of genocide. What if the separatists had been a united group and reduced the number of strikes? And  what if the state had punished ( not in the sense what it means now) just one killer. At least! At least! The number of “killed” would have been less than it is now. But everyone did what it  had done always. One of the interesting things was the press conferences by  chief minister and  Cabinet minister Ali Muhammad Sagar. CM  expressed his condolences for all the bereaved and  Sagar expressed his innumerable ‘concerns’ on matters of ‘Grave concern’ which ‘concern’ us.  Well while expressing condolences and condemning killings, you condone something. Your job is done by merely condemnations and condolences, that is a natural response, please do something more than that.  Please act. In this pandemonium, every institution, be it social, civic, political, academic, government, suffers… No one can say what to do. But as experience has taught us … everyone knows WHAT NOT TO.
