2 labourers knocked to death

Banihal, July 9: At least two pedestrian were knocked to death by a fast moving vehicle, at Ramsu on Srinagar-Jammu highway here,  on Friday.
Official sources said that the vehicle fled from the spot after hitting two pedestrian. One of them, identified as Ilam Din Gujjar son of Faqir Muhammad of Hingi, Ramsu died on the spot, while another, Muhammad Shafi of Ramsu, succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital. Police said that deceased were labourers and the only bread earner of their families.
Eyewitnesses said that the police sounded an alert as the driver fled from the spot along with his card after the mishap. The driver was later arrested by a police party near Banihal, where a special Naka was laid for the purpose. The driver, later turned out to be a lawyer. He was identified as Jagdish Raj Gupta of Jammu.
It was learnt that the erring lawyer was on way to the Amarnath pilgrimage when the mishap took place. He has been booked for rash and negligent driving.
Later in the day people of Ramsu observed a shutdown against the police and traffic officials, which, according them, have failed to curb the menace of over speeding on the highway.
The locals also staged a protest demonstration and shouted slogans against police and state government.
