JK seeks GI for handicrafts

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

Jammu, May 31: J&K government is seeking geographical indication (GI) for the state's famous handicraft products like papier-mache and walnut wood items under “Kashmir brand.”
Not only this, the documentation has been completed for preparing on application for khatambandh (highly designed hand-made roof).
Once the GI registration is received for these products it will help to build up “Brand Kashmir” in handicrafts, according to officials.
A geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin.
The handicraft sector is the other very important sector being looked after by the department, they said, adding about 3.5 lakh people are engaged in handicrafts and over Rs 230 crore in revenue was realised from export of handicraft products last year.
It may be recalled that under the handloom sector, Kashmir’s kani shawl has got the geographical indication as legal protection all over the globe last year. The shawl is a hand woven item with very beautiful designs.
