Protests rock Kupwara, 2 schools sealed
SHAHID RAFIQ
Kupwara, May 31: Amid allegations of presence of objectionable material in syllabus of two private schools of Tarathpora near here put this border district on boil today as demonstrators torched some bunkers of forces and broke the glass panes of vehicles forcing a complete shutdown with hundreds of people demanding immediate closure of the schools and arrest of their management bodies.
Agitated protestors forced a complete strike in Kupwara, Trehgam and Kralpora areas of the district. Within minutes all the business establishments were closed and movement of traffic thinned as the angry protestors raising slogans against the school managements marched through streets.
Fearing trouble, the district administration immediately sealed both the schools and to control the protests heavy contingent of police and central reserve police force were deployed. Later, protestors were pacified and dispersed peacefully.
When contacted the Chief Education Officer, H S Bali, told Greater Kashmir that both the schools had been sealed and a team of officers constituted to investigate the matter.
GKNN adds from Srinagar:
In a statement, the Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, alleged anti-Islamic books and subjects were being taught at a missionary school at Tarathpora, demanding legal action against the people involved in the conspiracy to wean away Muslim children from their religion.
Meanwhile, Dukhtan-e-Millat chief, Syeda Aasiya Andrabi, has said that mere condemnation of conspiracies made by anti-Islamic elements was not the solution to such incidents but the Muslim Ummah should do self-introspection and avoid getting their wards enrolled with such institutions involved in carrying out propaganda against Islam.
