Army felling tress in Machil: Forest Deptt

Kupwara, June 10: Felling of green trees allegedly by 8 SIKHLI unit is going on unabated in Machil area of this frontier district from the past two weeks.
According to Forest officials the Army unit had chopped off more than 13 green trees of Fir and Kail in compartment No-31(M) and 69(M) of Chuntiwari. “After the report of Range officer Machil that the regiment posted at T-Chuntiwari camp has chopped green trees in broad daylight for construction purposes, the department filed a case vide No- 1/2010 Dated 26-05-2010 against the unit and is preparing the damage report to be send to army for reimbursement,” a senior official in the forest department told Greater Kashmir.
The report, a copy of which is lying with Greater Kashmir, reveals “the trees were cut on the instructions of the commanding officer of the unit and for felling of trees, the unit has utilized the services of the porters and mates.”
“Army has restricted the movement of the concerned forest field staff to the areas, where wanton loot of green gold is going on” the report revealed.
When contacted, the army spokesman Col. J S Brar declined to comment over the issue.
