Commercial Taxes Deptt goes hi tech

GK NEWS NETWORK

Srinagar, June 11: After the implementation of VAT in the state the Commercial Taxes department has achieved another milestone by introducing computerization of the departmental activities to bring in efficiency, transparency and relief to the dealers.
The Department has recently signed an agreement with M/s TATA consultancy services for the purpose.
Giving details, an official statement said, the department has successfully implemented the VAT regime in the State and has been adjudged as the best VAT implementing in the country despite the huge handicap of not having computerization in place.
The introduction of computerization is aimed towards a smooth switch over from the VAT to the dynamic regime on tax on goods and services which is envisaged to be in place in the country from  Ist April 2011, it said.
With an overall cost of Rs. 38 crore for computerization of the Departments of Commercial Taxes of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, the project is to be largely funded by Government of India under the aegis of Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers, New Delhi.
While as major issues pertaining to registration, filing of returns, processing of various statutory forms etc. are expected to get covered within the first eight months, the project in totality should be in  place by the end of financial year 2011-12.
