Potato crop has tremendous scope in JK

Srinagar, June 11: Potato cultivation will help uplift economy of farmers’ community, said Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir, while reviewing the meeting with Director Agriculture Kashmir and senior officers of Agriculture Department on Tuesday.
 He said the potato cultivation has a tremendous scope in J&K in general and backward areas of state like Gurez, Machil etc. in particular, the department in a statement here today said.
 The statement quoted minister as saying that potato cultivation is cash crop and will increase the economy of farmers in general and poor peasants residing in backwards areas of J&K.
 “For achieving good results we need potato seed banks which can be obtained by establishing seed villages in virus free atmosphere of Gurez, Machil etc. and for this poor peasants will be given economic support by the government,” he said.
 Director Agriculture Mian Abdul Majid said that 1700 hectares of land were brought under high yielding variety of potato crop.
