Parliamentary committee on assessment tour to Ladakh

SAMAAN LATEEF

Srinagar, June 14: A 20-member Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence commenced its 3-day Ladakh visit from Monday in which it would assess functioning of defence organisations at high altitude.
The committee is led by Congress MP Satpal Maharaj and would take stock of the adverse conditions faced by the defence organisations and troops in chilling weather.
A defence spokesman said the committee would also be briefed on the salient aspect of “Operation Vijay”, which began in summer of 1999 to eject intruders from Kargil heights.
On the first day of its visit, the committee was briefed about the highest battlefield of the world, the Siachen Glacier.
Apart from visiting establishments in Eastern Ladakh, the committee also visited the `Fire and Fury’ Corps headquarters to get an insight into the role of the army in inhospitable areas.
The members also visited the Defence Institute of Horticulture and Agriculture Research (DIHAR) at Leh.
The deputy commissioner Leh, T Anshuk told Greater Kashmir, “We welcomed the 20- member committee. The Defence Institute for High Altitude Research is coordinating with the committee.”
