Dying art

Mehran Qureshi’s review of the art exhibition recently held at the Institute of Hotel Management came as a whiff of fresh air. The sociological, psychological background of art was very well explained by the author, though he could hardly avoid anarchist overtones in his insights. When societies die the finer things die first. In our case it is the art. Art plays a subtle but significant role in any society. Normally it is art that gives vent to the feelings of dissent and despair in a mellow and non-confrontational way. The slow and lingering death that the Kashmiri fine arts are dying has got to do with the stagnant mindsets as much as with economic and market reasons. Somewhere down our modern history, it seems, we lost touch with our aesthetic past and stopped to evolve in terms of art. No wonder even the ‘badam’ motif on our shawls hasn’t changed or evolved for as long as one can remember.
