GoM on Bhopal gas tragedy to meet on Friday

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

New Delhi, Jun 15: The reconstituted Group of Ministers (GoM) on the Bhopal gas tragedy is likely to consider giving some fresh compensation for the victims on the lines of payment made to 1984 Sikh riots affected under a budgetary provision.
Citing the example of Sikh riot victims, who got special assistance under a budgetary provision, the sources said the GoM may consider a similar relief from the government side.
Official sources said the financial compensation could be one measure that could assuage the feelings of the victims' families who are enraged over the light punishment to the guilty in the gas tragedy that claimed 15,000 lives nearly 26 years ago.
The sources said even execution of the light punishment might take a long time because of the legal process the convicted people would resort to.
They said the possibility of the extradition of former Union Carbide CEO Warren Anderson also appears to be remote as the United States has very few instances of handing over its citizens for trial on a foreign soil.
Meanwhile, Home Minister P Chidambaram, who heads the GoM, today said they would meet on Friday.
"The GoM will meet on the afternoon of June 18," Chidambaram told reporters here after his briefing on a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs
