Varmul produces 55,000 MTs of fruit

Bandipora, June 15: A record production of 55396 metric tonnes fresh and dry fruit has been recorded in Bandipora district during 2009-10. The production has fetched an income of Rs. 35 crore to the orchardists of the district.
This, according to an official statement, was stated by the District Development Commissioner, Manzoor Ahmad Lone, while inaugurating a week long training course organised by the Horticulture department under Women’s Development Programme. As many as 50 educated girls would be imparted training about preservation and proper use of fruit and vegetables during the training programme.
It was also told that 32000 apple and walnut plants besides 14 metric tonnes barbed wire costing Rs. 8 lakh have been provided to the orchardists for developing orchards in hilly areas of the district.
Horticulture department also provided Rs. 16.37 lakh subsidy under Micro Irrigation Scheme to the orchardists of the district for developing irrigation facilities in the orchards.
