BGSBU accepts students’ demands
SHAFIQ MIR
Rajouri, June 16: The authorities of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University here have conceded almost all the demands of the agitating engineering students.
This was conveyed to the students by the authorities through a half-page advertisement in newspapers Wednesday. The authorities conceded eight out of nine demands, saying the introduction of relative grading system will be referred to the academic council.
“If all the demands of the students have been conceded it means their agitation was genuine. Now the government should immediately probe the un-provoked police attack on the students,” said Abdul Rashid, a student’s parent.
Ex-students meet to debate crisis:
Meanwhile, scores of pass out students of the University met here to debate the on-going crisis in the institution. Besides condemning the ‘dictatorial’ attitude of the university authorities including the Vice-Chancellor and use of police force on students on Sunday, they blamed the state government of failure in appointing a new Vice-Chancellor.
“The term of the present Vice-Chancellor stands expired a year ago. It is surprising that the search committee constituted for the purpose didn’t meet once in the past two years of its formation,” said a former student.
The students proposed the name of Prof. Irshad Ahmed Hamaal, present Proctor of Bhaderwah university campus and former Dean Academic Affairs, for the VC’s post.
Present VC Masood Chowdhary, a retired police officer, was appointed in 2005 by the then Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed for two years. Then he managed two years’ extension in the Azad-led government. The state government constituted a search committee two years ago and at least four persons have submitted their resumes.
