‘Ensure your tax deduction at source is accounted for’
Many PAN holders don’t file IT returns: Sufi

Srinagar, June 1: Chief Commissioner, Income Tax, A itsar, G R Sufi, today said a substantial number of individual PAN holders did not file returns of income in the state, while some among them had stopped filing returns due to unknown reasons.
Sufi was speaking at meeting with members of Income Tax Bar Association of Kashmir. Exhorting the members to educate people about the importance of filing IT returns, Sufi stressed the need for possessing a PAN card.
Problems arising due to non-quoting of Tax Deduction Account Number (TAN) also came up for discussion. The members said the fault lay at the level of the Drawing Disbursing Officers who may be urged to take up corrective measurers.
The Chief Commissioner assured the delegation that necessary steps for educating the assessees as well as ensuring compliance by the Drawing and Disbursing Officers were being taken soon.
The Bar members were urged to request their clients to provide PAN at the time of tax deduction at source so that it was properly credited and reflected in e-TDS returns filed by them.
“They were also urged to identify such deductors who fail to upload e-TDS returns correctly,” the department in a statement said.
The members on their part expected “the department to take action against the errant deductors who cause harassment to the honest tax payers by either not uploading their TDS returns or by incorrect filing of such returns.”
Sufi assured the members of suitable action under law against such deductors.
The meeting among others was attended by Tajinder Pal Singh, Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, Srinagar, S K Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, Circle Srinagar and Shabir Handoo, Nooruddin, M. A. Shah and Gulzarin, Income tax officers of Srinagar Range.
