JK faces 40 pc foodgrain deficit

Srinagar, June 20: Even as foodgrain production has increased form 2.12 lakh MTs in 1950-51 to 7.73 lakh MTs in 2009-10, J&K is still deficit by 35-40 pc.
The Agriculture Department has a target to bring 50,000 hectares of paddy land under wheat cultivation which will supplement two lakh MTs of food grains and reduce the gap of demand and availability to 10 per cent.
This was stated by Director Agriculture Kashmir Main Abdul Majeed while visiting fields of paddy wheat rotation crop sown at Chakun and Khaigam of District Varmul.
Associate Director Researches SKUAST-K Shafiq Ahmad Mir accompanied the director.
The director said foodgrain production can be achieved only after special action plan is undertaken to explore all avenues of production grain.
He said the agriculture department has been making all out efforts to achieve high productivity by tapping the land resources, irrigation potential introduction of high yielding variety seeds, maintenance of soil fertility, introduction of farm mechanization, hybrid vegetable cultivation together with dissemination of improved management practices.
The key challenges confronting Agriculture is to produce grains for growing population in sustainable manner.
During the Rabi cropping 2009-10 paddy wheat rotation of 180 hectares land have been brought under wheat crop and during 2010-11 covering an area of about 3000 hectare with an established increase in production of 10 lakh quintals of wheat which will be the milestone towards reducing the gap between the production and requirement of bridging grains.
