National Bamboo Mission launched in Kashmir

Srinagar, June 20: Budgam is the third place after Teetwal and Uri in the Kashmir Division where Bamboo cultivation under National Bamboo mission was formally launched today by planting Bamboo slapping procured from Institute of Himalyan bio-Research Technology Plampur, Himachal Pradesh.

 The Minister for Agriculture Mr. Gh. Hassan Mir accompanied by Minister of State for Agriculture and Health, Mr. Javid Ahmad Dar, planted the slapping in a nursery at Kariparoo Budgam in presence of large number of farmers, besides Agriculture Employees and other Agriculture activities.The launching ceremony was also attended by District Development Commissioner, Budgam Mohammad Rafi, Director Agriculture Kashmir, Mian Ab. Majid and concerned officers.

 Addressing the function, Mr. Ghulam Hassan Mir emphasized the need to popularize the Bamboo cultivation in Kashmir division particularly in the waste land area.

 Stressing for involving private sector in the venture, Mr Mir said that  cultivations highly commercialized in nature prevent soil erosion and also prove to be source of alternate employability. He said the timber obtained from Bamboo can be used in Handicrafts goods, furniture fencings, green Horse structures and irrigation pipes.

 The Minister said about 70% of the population is affiliated with Agriculture sector, accordingly farmer friendly schemes are being implemented to boost the production of crop and develop Agriculture sector as a major sources of income. He said for the benefit of farmers and minimise their hardships, latest techniques are being introduced to ensure highly productive seeds. In this connection, the Minister said that the farmers will be given special wheat seeds during current Rabi season. He said people are very much aware about saffron sector which is presently under shambles. To restore its pristine glory and also to speed up its production, government has earmarked Rs. 375 crore under saffron mission.
