Machil porters’ killing under scanner
Victims Fired From Close Range, Clothes Intact
UMER MAQBOOL DAR
Srinagar, June 22: After the Machil fake encounter, the Sunday’s killing of two army porters in Machil sector of Kupwara has also come under scanner. While the army says the two were killed in firing from across the LoC, preliminary medical reports question the troops’ version.
The medicos who performed the autopsy of the porters have found that their clothes were intact but their bodies had bullet and pellet injuries.
The team of doctors comprising Dr. Khaliq, Dr. Mukhtar and Dr. Zia performed autopsy of the bodies on Monday at sub-district hospital Kupwara. Their findings revealed that bodies of Muhammad Mujnoon Malik and Abdul Aziz Malik had bullet and pellet injuries respectively.
They said wounds on their bodies revealed that they were fired from both close and long range. Sources told Greater Kashmir that police have directed Chowki Officer of Machil police post to record the statements of the families of the victims.
Police said they would also investigate whether cross LoC firing had taken place, as claimed by army.
“We would also seek records from labour officer of concerned unit as part of investigation,” they said, adding that victims were working as regular porters with the army.
Police said that FSL opinion would ascertain cause of their death. Superintendent of Police, Kupwara, Uttam Chand, said police was investigating the matter.
“We have conducted the post mortem report of the deceased and are awaiting the report. We lodged an FIR on army complaint,” he added.
Pertinently, 8-Sikh light infantry unit of army on Sunday had claimed that two porters were killed and two troopers wounded when Pakistani troops opened fire in violation of the ceasefire in Machil sector of Kupwara.
