GOWHAR BHAT
Srinagar, June 22: Ahead of the all party meet proposed to be convened by the chairman Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, authorities launched a crackdown on the separatist leadership.
While Mirwaiz continued to be under house arrest at his Nigeen residence for the second day running today, several other leaders were rounded up by the police during the day.
A Hurriyat (M) spokesman said that several leaders were arrested by the police.
Police arrested Democratic Freedom Party leader, Moulana Abdullah Tari, and Peoples Political Front leader Musadiq Aadil soon after they left the conglomerate headquarters at Rajbagh here.
Police also arrested Hurriyat Conference (G), spokesman, Ayaz Akbar from his residence in the city outskirts.
Other leaders of Mirwaiz led Hurriyat were either arrested or put under house arrest. Zaffar Akbar Bhat was arrested on Sunday while Moulana Masroor Abbas Ansari was put under house arrest.
A Hurriyat spokesman said that earlier in the day, a meeting was held at Mirwaiz’s Nigeen residence.
Mirwaiz had called an all parties meeting on June 24 for evolving a joint strategy to resist the ongoing civilian killings by police and paramilitary troopers.
While emphasising that meeting would not be restricted to any political ideology, Mirwaiz had said that an invitation shall also be extended to veteran pro-freedom leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, for being part of the meeting.
Meanwhile, Geelani and another Hurriyat (G) leader Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai continue to be lodged at the Joint Interrogation Centre centre at Humhama on the outskirts of Srinagar.
They duo was arrested from North Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
