Anti-SASB protest in Pahalgam

KHALID GUL

Pahalgam, June 23:  Hundreds of people took to the streets in this world famous health resort in south Kashmir on Wednesday against the decision of the Shri-Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) to restrict the number of stalls to be established en-route to the Amaranth cave shrine only to 125 in contrast to the earlier number of 1000.
Protesters raising anti-SASB slogans blocked the Pahalgam road for more than an hour. However, officials and  the SASB men reached the spot and assured them that their genuine demands would be met.
The residents accused the SASB of disassociating the locals from this religious affair and depriving them of their earnings. “The sanctity of Yatra, considered to be the symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity, has been tarnished by the SASB as they want to disassociate the local population from it,” said a resident, Mushtaq Magray.
He said that the not only do the poor people earn during the Yatra but it imbibes a sense of brotherhood and communal harmony between the two communities.
“Despite paying Rs 1500 as a rent for setting up a shop on our own land, the board is depriving us of the permission , the locals alleged.
