Cabinet to discuss Bhopal package today
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, June 23: The Union Cabinet will discuss on Thursday the report of the Group of Ministers (GoM) on Bhopal gas disaster that has recommended enhanced compensation to the victims under a Rs 1,500 crore package that includes funds for cleaning up the toxic site.
In a change of plan, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who leaves for Canada on Friday, is believed to have decided that the Bhopal issue should be discussed in the Cabinet tomorrow itself instead of on June 25 as slated earlier, sources said.
Home Minister P Chidambaram, who heads the GoM, will also leave for Pakistan on Friday for attending the SAARC Interior Ministers meeting. On Monday, Chidambaram had submitted the GoM report.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is also likely to be back in the capital from the United States in time to attend the meeting.
The Cabinet is expected to consider the report and take a view on its various recommendations, including filing a curative petition in the Supreme Court against dilution of charges against the accused in the Bhopal gas leak that claimed over 15,000 lives nearly 26 years ago.
The Cabinet is also likely to take a decision on pursuing afresh efforts to seek extradition of former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson from the United States to stand trial in the case.
