SKUAST educates farmers about labour saving paddy transplantation

Jammu, June23: Shier-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Science and Technology (SKUAST) Farming system Research centre today organized one day field visit of farmers for demonstrating the practices of mechanized paddy transplanting, which can transplant the paddy without much improvement of labour. Transplanting of rice is mostly done by hand and is labour intensive and consuming due to which the operation often get delayed due to non availability of labour in time, resulting in yield depressions besides increases lot of input cost of production.
FSR centre for the last 6 years is continuously conducting trails on resource conservation in rice, wheat cropping system. The results reveal that use of rice establishment method through either hand transplanter or through power paddy transplanter is effective not only in labour saving but also helps in boosting the productivity, besides reducing the cost of production.
For mechanical transplanting of rice mat type and optimum puddle bed conditions are the two important pre-requisites.
Dr B Mishra Vice-Chancellor present on the occasion, urged the farmers to adopt such labour saving methods.
He emphasized that the small farmers must pool their resources and work in a group and purchase such machinery which are being tested by the SKUAST-J scientists in their field for better production with minimal input requirement He also called upon the farmers that the rice based profitable and sustainable crop diversification recommendations developed by the FSR centre shall be adopted. He disclosed that FSR centre has imitated its work on the integrated farming system where different farming enterprises for providing effective technologies targeting small and medium land holding farmers.
