Demeaning doctors
This refers to the article titled ‘Demeaning Doctors, Misleading Patients’ by Dr Mushtaq Chalkoo (GK June 19). I hail Dr Chalkoo for sparing sometime on writing on such a serious and important issue. He has exposed the mockery that has been made of our healthcare system. I agree that the word ‘Doctor’ is being misused in our state by so many practitioners and medical professionals belonging to various streams of therapy like the Unani, Ayurvedic, Physiotherapists etc. Generally patients go to a hospital with a notion that they would be treated by an allopathic physician. But to their ignorance, they never know that the person with a stethoscope is not the allopathic doctor. The brunt of this state of affairs is borne by a patient who happens to be ignorant of the reality. Government should come up with a firm policy on how to deal with this issue.
