Implement CBMs on Kashmir: Dr Beg to PM

Srinagar: Member Parliament, Dr Mehboob Beg Thursday appealed to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh to convert his thought on Confidence Building Measures related to Kashmir into a reality.
Senior National Conference leader said the PM’s offer of giving “anything short of Azadi” will bloom only if he transcends the literally words into action. “Otherwise this glimmer of hope for Kashmiri might get dampened and in turn prove detrimental for the psyche of the people.”
Dr Beg expressed concern over the reluctance shown by the Army in an initiative to repeal Armed Forces Special Power Act. He said it could set a “dangerous trend of army intervention” in a democratic set up.
“A committee set up by none other than the Prime Minister had recommended repealing of AFSPA and also removal of troops from the civilian areas as an effective CBM in the long run. I urge the authorities to balm the shattered psyche of the people of the state,” he said.
