2005 snow Tsunami victims await relief
Rs 1.38 cr compensation yet to reach people
MUHAMMAD TASKEEN
Banihal, June 25: While the government has already sanctioned Rs 1.35 crore as relief for 6600 affected families of 2005 snow Tsunami of erstwhile Doda District, the authorities have failed to disburse the sanctioned compensation among the victims and families of those killed, even after five years.
About sixty three persons were killed and over hundred were injured, while 7241 houses were damaged in areas along Chenab River following heavy snow storm that struck the state in February 2005.
The official documents with Greater Kashmir show that the then state government had sanctioned Rs 1.98 crore proposed by the revenue authorities for paying compensation to the affected families of Chenab Valley.
Soon after the approval, Divisional Commissioner Jammu released Rs 60 lakh for the disbursement among the victims of the natural calamity. However, the remaining Rs 1.38 crore has not been released yet and the affected families are still awaiting the compensation.
Out of Rs 60 lakh received earlier, Rs 29 lakh were disbursed among the next of the kin of 58 persons who lost their lives in the snow storm.
Interestingly, the kin of five other persons whose bodies were recovered later in the year have not been given any compensation till date. While out of the remaining amount of Rs 31 lakh, Rs 29,19000 was distributed among 643 families whose houses were damaged, remaining 6598 families enlisted are yet to get the relief.
Pertinently, centre had provided special funds for providing relief to the families who were affected by the snowfall.
As per the official figures, out of over Rs 1.8 crore compensation assessed for 1809 totally damaged houses, only Rs 28,19000 were distributed among 456 families, while rest of them have not received any compensation till date.
Similarly, out off Rs 40.056 lakh compensation assessed for 3338 badly damaged houses, only Rs 1.85 lakh were distributed among 154 families, while out of Rs 16.75 lakh sanctioned for 2094 partially damaged houses, only Rs 26,400 were distributed among 33 such cases. However, there are 6598 affected families who are still waiting for the compensation which is accounted to Rs 1.38 crore.
