B’pore villagers consume polluted Jhelum water
TARIQ RASOOL
Banyari (Bandipora), June 25: The residents of scores of villages in north Kashmir’s Bandipore district are consuming water directly from Jhelum.
The residents of Banyari, Madvan, Shahgund, Hajin, Prang and Ghulamyari consume water from Jhelum as the sole filtration plant had been defunct for the past one year.
The residents of Banyari complain that the water storage tank constructed at a cost of Rs 12 lakh in 2006 was in dilapidated condition and needed immediate repairs.
The medicos working in area told Greater Kashmir that people, especially children were suffering from water-borne diseases due to consumption of the polluted water. “The children are prone to such diseases and the government should provide proper water facility to save the precious lives,” Dr Abdul Ahad told Greater Kashmir.
Deputy commissioner Bandipore, Manzoor Ahmed said a team of officials would be sent to the area to look into the matter.
Talking to Greater Kashmir Executive Engineer Civil Sopur/Bandipore, Chowdhary Abdul Qayoom said there was a technical fault in the filtration plant. “The problem would be solved in few weeks and the department has got instructions from higher ups to repair the tank,” he said.
