Establishment of crusher at Sheikh Pora triggers protest

ALTAF BABA

Varmul, June 27: Accusing the authorities of ‘flouting’ the norms, hundreds of people took to streets at Sheikh Pora Kreeri here against the establishment of a stone crusher in the densely populated area
According to locals, the owner of the stone crusher started its construction a few months back despite the objections raised by the inhabitants of the area. “He halted the work for some time, but restarted it,” the locals alleged.
“The stone crusher is located just 150 feet away from the population and 50 meters from the agriculture land. The establishment of such a unit in the vicinity will prove fatal for the entire population and would damage the crops,” said Abdul Hamid of Sheikh Pora.
Concerned over the issue, the residents said the crusher should not be allowed to establish as it flouted the guidelines framed by the State Pollution Control Board.
“Any stone crusher has to maintain distance from the population as well as forest and the agriculture land. But in this case, the crusher is also close to a high school and a middle school,” Farooq Ahmad said.
When contacted Deputy Commissioner, Varmul Basher Ahmad said the residents were divided in two groups of which one is in favour of establishing the crusher while the second group is opposing it. “The people should come forward and we will definitely look into the matter” he said.
