Sadhus attack media men, 4 hurt
GK NEWS NETWORK
Jammu, June 27: At least four photojournalists were injured in an attack by dozens of Naga Sadhus here on Sunday, during a demonstration over the alleged lack of proper arrangement in view of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra.
The Sadhus (Holy Hindu men) assembled at Canal Road and staged a demonstration against the inadequate arrangements by the administration for their stay in Jammu. The protestors were demanding that they be permitted to stay at Yatri Niwas at Bhagwati Nagar along with other pilgrims.
Trouble erupted as soon as media persons reached the spot to cover the demonstration. The Sadhus suddenly started attacking media men in presence of policemen, who were deployed in large number.
At least four photojournalist were wounded, one of them seriously, in the attack. “We were covering the demonstration when some protestors attacked us with batons”, a victim said.
While three injured photographers were discharged from the hospital after first aid, one of them, working with a cable TV, has suffered serious injuries and was admitted in Government Medical College Hospital Jammu.
Eyewitnesses said the Sadhus were annoyed with the media men for repeatedly publishing their pictures, while smoking Chilam. “Some days back they had locked a photojournalist inside the bathroom for several hours”, they said.
The protestors later moved towards Purani Mandi area, where the administration made arrangements for their stay. “We have deliberately kept them out of the city as we know mixing them with other pilgrims would be disastrous”, a police officer, preferring not to be named, said.
