Srinagar, June 28: the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), Field Operations Division, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India, Regional Office Srinagar is celebrating 29th June, 2010 as “ Statistics Day”.
The day is celebrated in the memory of late Prof P. C. Mahalanobis, the father of Indian Statistics.
The purpose of celebration of the “Statistic Day” is to create the public awareness among the people especially the younger generation for drawing inspiration from late Prof P. C. Mahalanobis about the role of Statistics in Socio-economic planning and policy formulation, an official statement said.
NSSO has been in service to the nation since 1950. It has been instrumental in developmental, in developing a strong database on various Socio-Economic parameters through its country wide sample survey, which have helped the centre as well as State Governments in development planning and policy formulations. The National Sample Survey (NSS) data are utilizing for estimation of poverty, construction of prices indices and assessing impact of various programme on pattern and level of household consumption, expenditure, employment, unemployment situation, condition of farmers, migration, utilization of health and education services, etc. Enterprise surveys which is used for estimation of national income and gross fixed capital formation, input-output analysis, etc. The success of conducting of these surveys critically depends to a great extent on the quality of the response from public.
