Academy wakes to revive Dastaan

Srinagar, June 2: As part of cultural dialogue series, the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages has decided to revive the dying Kashmiri folk traditions particularly Dastaan, an official handout Wednesday said.

 “Our folk traditions like Dastaan are dying and there is an urgent need to preserve them,” said, Secretary Cultural Academy, Zafar Iqbal Manhas. He was speaking on the sidelines of the two day folk music programme being held at Academy headquarters. Lal Mandi in the City.

 The programme is being conducted collectively by the Cultural Academy and the North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala for revival of the fast vanishing folk traditions of Kashmir.

 “Our aim is to revive the dying traditions so as to preserve them for posterity,” said Liaison officer, North Zone Cultural Centre Patiala, Praveen Gupta.

 During the first day of the two day folk music programme, Mohammed Ismail Mir and party narrated the old Kashmiri folktales commonly known as Dastaan.
